Bar Human Rights Committee

Chairman:
Mark Muller QC

Project Coordinator:
Naoimh Hughes

The Bar Human Rights Committee is the international human rights arm of the Bar Council. The principal objectives of the BHRC are:

(i) the support and protection of practising lawyers and judges who are threatened or oppressed in their work;

(ii)
upholding the rule of law and internationally recognised human rights standards;

(iii)
furthering interest in and knowledge of human rights and the laws relating to human rights;

(iv)
advising, supporting and co-operating with other organisations and individuals working for human rights;

(v)
advising the General Council of the Bar of England & Wales in connection with any human rights issues.

The Bar Human Rights Committee is not a Bar Council Committee. It is an independent body based in London. All members are practising barristers who offer their services on a pro-bono basis. The organisation employs one full time administrator.

The remit of the Bar Human Rights Committee is international, and does not include the domestic jurisdiction of England and Wales. The BHRC does not normally become involved in questions of human rights abuses in England and Wales except by providing advice on request to other organisations concerned with such matters, or to the General Council of the Bar.

The Committee has divided the areas of the globe into Sections and a Section Head is responsible for the overall co-ordination and strategy. Please make all enquiries via the Administrator by email, phone or letter.

Journalists/Media Enquiries: Please direct media enquiries to the Administrator who will contact the appropriate Committee member. BHRC members are available for quotes, interviews and specialist legal reactions to international human rights issues.

Barristers and Legal Professionals: All members of the Bar of England and Wales, and pupils are welcome to attend meetings. If you have an interest or an involvement in international human rights issues please contact the Administrator for times and dates of meetings. Meetings are also open to interested NGO’s and relevant campaigning organisations.

NGOs and Human Rights Organisations: The Bar Human Rights Committee works closely with a number of leading human rights NGOs and in co-operation with legal professionals internationally. If you are interested in more information on projects visit our web site
