About the Employed Barristers’ Committee

The Employed Barristers’ Committee (EBC) is one of the Bar Council’s representative Committees. It represents and promotes the interests of the employed Bar within and beyond the Bar Council. Its membership includes barristers from a wide range of career backgrounds, from across the country. Almost half of the members of the 2011 Committee are elected members of the Bar Council.

The EBC meets regularly to consider and address issues facing the employed Bar.

Employed Pupillages - becoming a Pupillage Training Organisation

One of the recommendations contained in Lord Neuberger’s report entitled Entry to the Bar stated that ‘the Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board should work towards ensuring that more employed and other pupillages are made available’.

The EBC has been supporting the Neuberger Monitoring and Implementation Group in taking this forward by identifying the difficulties encountered by employers when applying for authorisation as a Pupillage Training Organisation (PTO). It has prepared some advice for firms considering applying to become a PTO. This sets out the steps needed in making an application and contains links to the formal guidance and application forms that are available from the Bar Standards Board.
