Guide to Professional Conduct and Discipline of the Legal Profession

The International Committee (IC) of the Bar Council has produced this manual in response to a strong international interest in a practical guide to professional conduct and discipline issues. Many bar associations from different parts of the world have in recent years asked the Bar Council to draw on the long tradition of integrity at the English and Welsh Bar, to assist them in clarifying the principles of lawyers’ ethics and ways of enforcing them. They also expressed the wish for practical assistance in developing or improving their own codes of conduct and associated enforcement structures.

The guide is hence mainly intended for bar associations, but also for parliamentarians, government officials and other interested parties. It is hoped that it will become a useful tool for assisting reform efforts in other jurisdictions.

The Bar Council welcomes requests for technical support in using and implementing the guide from bar associations and other relevant bodies. If you are interested in this service, please contact the international team.

The guide is offered as a free resource but the Bar Council asks that where it is used for training or publication, they are fully credited. The guide is available for download here.

Production of the guide was generously funded in full by the FCO.
