Finance and funding
Training to be a barrister will require careful financial
planning. It can be an expensive process, but the Bar is committed
supporting talented aspiring barristers who may otherwise find that
cost prohibitive.
If you are interested in being a barrister you should research
and consider the costs of the courses you will need to take,
including (if applicable) the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), the
Bar Professional Training Course, your estimated living costs and
expenses during your training and pupillage, as well as the costs
of Qualifying Sessions that you must undertake before being Called
to the Bar.
For 2011 admission, the course fees for the BPTC typically
ranged between £10,000 to £16,000, depending on provider and
location. GDL fees typically range from £4,000 to £10,000. Please
click here for more information about the BPTC providers on the Bar
Standards Board website. Details of the current costs of the GDL
and BPTC at each provider are available on their websites.
