  • 26 May 2011 - Maura McGowan QC has been named the Vice Chairman-Elect of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, following a contested election. She will take up the post of Vice Chairman on 1 January 2012.

  • 19 May 2011 - The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Bar of England and Wales will be held at 1030 hrs on Saturday 18 June 2011 in the Oak Room of the Bar Council (289-293 High Holborn, London). It will be preceded by a meeting of the Bar Council. Click here for further information.

  • 19 May 2011 - The Chairman of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, is addressing the first St Petersburg International Legal Forum, which is being held from 19-21 May. The forum, which is being organised by the Russian Ministry of Justice and the St Petersburg International Legal Forum Foundation, aims to bring together leading experts in law and economics to discuss the most pressing legal issues of the modern world. The Bar Council delegation will be led by the Chairman of the Bar, Peter Lodder QC. Following a keynote speech by the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev, the Chairman will address the conference on the topic: “The Rule of law: Challenges posed by the fight against Terrorism and Corruption.”

  • 16 May 2011 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has voiced its support for the Ministry of Justice’s new Action Plan to promote the UK’s legal services sector. The plan has been jointly published by the MoJ and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), and sets out how the Government, along with key partners, will seek to strengthen the country’s reputation in commercial arbitration, mediation and court services.

  • 13 May 2011 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, will once again be participating in the London Legal Walk on Monday 16 May. Its representatives will join 67 other Bar teams from barristers’ chambers, Specialist Bar Associations and other Bar-related organisations on a walk led by, among others, the Chairman of the Bar, Peter Lodder QC, the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, the Master of the Rolls, The Rt Hon The Lord Neuberger, the Attorney General, The Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC MP and the Justice Minister, Jonathan Djanogly MP. The walk will be the largest in its seven year history, with over 5,100 walkers having registered and teams from across the legal profession.
