Liberty's lawyers' petition against secret courts
19 October 2012
Update for the profession: Liberty has set up a petition against
the Government's plans, contained within the Justice and Security
Bill, to extend the use of Closed Material Procedures (CMPs) to
ordinary civil cases.
In July, the Chairman of the Bar, Michael Todd QC, condemned the
Bill in a strongly worded
press release, stating that the proposals "threaten to
undermine the principle of open justice and make a mockery of our
attempts to export the Rule of Law abroad".
Liberty plans to publish the names of signatories to the
petition, which can be signed until 2 November.
