Update from the Chairman: MoJ consultation on legal aid

12 April 2013

The Bar Council held its first post-publication meeting of the group dealing with the response to the Ministry of Justice's consultation paper last evening. The group represents a wide cross-section of the Bar, including Circuit Leaders, the Criminal Bar Association , Young Barristers' Committee, Institute of Barristers' Clerks and the Bar Council's Remuneration Committee. It will work closely with the Circuits and the Specialist Bar Associations (SBAs), although all will produce their own reports.

The group has two main working groups: one dealing with the proposed cuts and the other with the consequences to criminal justice of PCT for solicitors.

We welcome all help and suggestions but I repeat my request that as many SBAs, chambers and individuals should put in their own responses as possible. We will provide regular updates on how the Bar is responding to this consultation, on the outcome of which our future depends.
