  • 18 July 2013 - The Bar Council has launched updated taxation guidance for barristers to help them manage their tax position. This coincides with changes to the tax system introduced by the Finance Act 2013, which received Royal Assent on 18 July 2013.

  • 12 July 2013 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has called on the Government to allow Parliament to scrutinise its intention to opt-out of more than 130 EU criminal justice measures properly. This comes as a Motion to Approve the opt-out has been scheduled for Monday 15 July, rather than full parliamentary scrutiny.

  • 4 July 2013 - Maura McGowan QC, Chairman of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has congratulated David Nicholls, the Immediate Past Chairman of the Young Barristers’ Committee, on his election as the new President of the European Young Bar Association (EYBA).

  • 3 July 2013 - Nominations have now opened for the legal category of Women in the City’s ‘Women of Achievements Awards’, endorsed again this year by the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales.

  • 2 July 2013 - The Bar Council along with the Criminal Bar Association, at the invitation of the Law Society, has been involved in continuous discussions about the Ministry of Justice’s Transforming Legal Aid consultation, which included the London Criminal Court Solicitors Association, the Solicitors Association of Higher Court Advocates, the Criminal Law Solicitors Association, the Legal Aid Practitioners Group, the Society of Asian Lawyers and representatives of a number of large solicitors’ firms.

  • 1 July 2013 - Over the past few days we have been contacted by a number of barristers, solicitors and other respondents to the MoJ's Transforming Legal Aid consultation who have received emails from the MoJ saying that the emails containing their responses have been deleted unread. The Chairman of the Bar has spoken with senior officials at the MoJ this morning to raise our concerns directly.
