Letter from the Lord Chancellor to the Bar on legal aid announcement

27 February 2014

The Government has today announced its long-awaited response to its second consultation on legal aid. The Government intends to proceed with the proposed cuts to the rates paid under the Advocates Graduated Fee Scheme (AGFS). The response also announces a number of other measures.

We have today issued a press statement, which can be found here.

The Government's response is here. It is 95 pages long and deals with the Government proposals for litigators' contracts as well as the AGFS.

The Lord Chancellor has also written to Bar to summarise those parts of today's announcement which directly concern the Bar.  A copy of this letter can be found here.

We will be considering the Government's announcement carefully and consulting widely over the coming days before responding in detail.  I will write to you again when that has been done.

Chairman of the Bar
