    16 October 2014 - Following the Lord Chancellor’s evidence on October 15 2014 to the House of Lords Constitution Committee’s inquiry into the role of the Lord Chancellor, Nicholas Lavender QC, chairman of the Bar Council responds

  • 10 October 2014 - Due to ongoing interest, the Bar Council has extended the deadline for the 2014 Legal Reporting Awards to 17 October 2014. The Bar Council set up the annual Legal Reporting Awards 23 years ago to recognise print and broadcast journalists whose work contributes to a greater public understanding of legal issues.

  • 3 October 2014 - The Bar Council has warned that families across England & Wales have felt the full brunt of the Government’s civil legal aid cuts, with a drop of 15,000 per quarter, equivalent to 60,000 a year, in the number of people receiving legal aid for family cases which go to court.

  • 1 October 2014 - A service today at Westminster Abbey marked the Opening of the Legal Year, one of the most celebrated events in the legal profession’s calendar. The service follows on from a programme of events arranged by the Bar Council and The Law Society for legal practitioners from around the world.

    25 September 2014 - The Bar Council’s Placement Week initiative, aimed at improving social mobility within the profession, has been recognised by the legal industry after winning the Award for Diversity and Inclusion at the Halsbury Legal Awards hosted by LexisNexis in London last night (Wednesday 24 September 2014).

  • 25 September 2014 - The way in which barristers’ Practising Certificate Fees (PCF) are calculated will soon change to become fairer, the Bar Standards Board and Bar Council have announced today.

  • 23 September 2014 - The candidates who are standing in the election for the 2015 Bar Council have been announced. Ballot papers will be issued by the Bar Council not later than 3 October 2014, and must be returned to arrive at the Bar Council Offices not later than 10.00 on 20 October 2014.

  • 19 September 2014 - The Bar Council will make its case to Parliamentarians this party conference season to stress the importance of fair access to justice for all, and highlight the challenges involved in delivering an effective and efficient system of justice in this time of financial austerity.
