    4 June 2013 - The Bar Council responds to the legal aid consultation, warning planned reforms are: "A legacy of which no Government should be proud". The response, which runs to over 150 pages, incorporates expert economic and statistical analysis, which forensically examines the Government’s proposals, highlighting major flaws.

    29 May 2013 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, is hosting a 'Legal Aid Question Time' debate in Westminster, on the evening of Tuesday 18 June, to give a range of interested individuals and groups the chance to have their say on the proposed legal aid changes.

  • 24 May 2013 - Alistair MacDonald QC has been named the Vice Chairman-Elect of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, following a contested election. He will take up the post of Vice-Chairman on 1 January 2014.

  • 21 May 2013 - A ComRes poll, commissioned by the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, today shows that seven out of ten (71%) of the British public are concerned that cuts to legal aid could lead to innocent people being convicted of crimes they did not commit. The poll, published this morning, also shows that two-thirds (67%) of the British public agree that legal aid is a price worth paying for living in a fair society.

Our arguments are gaining traction and there are plenty of things we can all do to help advance them further. Today, we are releasing research that shows that a large majority of the public believes that our legal aid system is good value for money and they're worried that vulnerable people will suffer the most from cuts.

  • 15 May 2013 - The Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board are carrying out the second biennial survey of the Bar, the results of which will inform strategic planning and provide information on the working lives of barristers.

  • 14 May 2013 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has appointed a new Chief Executive. Stephen Crowne, who will take up the post on Monday 3 June, joins with wide-ranging experience of public and private sector leadership, most recently as Senior Director, Global Education, at Cisco, one of the world’s leading providers of networking equipment.

  • 14 May 2013 - Representatives of the Law Society and the Bar Council have joined forces with wider practitioner bodies to oppose the Ministry of Justice Consultation on proposed savage cuts to the funding of the Criminal Legal Aid Budget, the introduction of Price Competitive Tendering and other changes to the criminal justice system.
