Ethical Enquiries Line

A confidential guidance line for Code of Conduct queries.

Have you recently called or emailed the Bar Council to use this service?

The Bar Council is seeking to improve the ethical enquiries service for members of the Bar. If you are a barrister who has recently used the service, we would be grateful if you could complete a short and anonymous survey which you can access by clicking here. The survey will take around five minutes to complete.

From time to time, barristers may need guidance on ethical problems related to the Bar’s Code of Conduct.  For example, you may have a question about professional embarrassment, or may need guidance if you have a clash of cases.

If you are able to, you should first refer to the Guidance section on this website.  This will link you to all guidance published by the Bar Council and Bar Standards Board.  The Key Word Index should assist you to find what you are looking for.  There is also a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

If your enquiry is not covered in the Guidance or in the Frequently Asked Question section, the Bar Council has a team of staff who are trained to handle ethical enquiries.  Members of this team can be reached through the Ethical Queries Helpline: 020 7611 1307.  The helpline is open from 9.15 am to 5.15 pm.

Please note, that in busy times, it may be necessary for a member of staff to take your details and ask for a member of staff to call you back.  We undertake to do this as quickly as possible. Members of the team can also be contacted via email: Ethics@BarCouncil.org.uk.

The Ethical Enquiries Line is for practising members of the Bar.  We will not assist students who have been asked ethical questions in relation to their studies or solicitors or members of the public.  Solicitors and members of the public  should contact the Bar Standards Board on 020 7611 1444.
