Bar Council Launches Booklet on Legal Aid

The Bar Council today publishes a booklet marking the 60th anniversary of the Legal Aid and Advice Act 1949. The booklet, Legal Aid: 60 Years of Public Service by Barristers, which will be launched at the Chairman of the Bar’s Media Reception at Middle Temple this evening, sets out the history of legal aid since 1949 and describes how barristers funded by legal aid have acted for some of society’s most vulnerable over the past 60 years.
International Internships with the Paris Bar

The Bar Council is working with the Paris Bar to arrange 6 international internships this autumn, taking place in October and November.

The Bar Council has received reports that Chambers are being approached by a well established company who introduce clients to solicitors in return for a referral fee (15% of profit costs). The company is now looking to enter in to a similar arrangement with barristers doing public access work.
Bar and Law Society Voice Concerns over Best Value Tendering Scheme

Access to justice is at risk as the Government ploughs on with its reckless approach to Best Value Tendering said the Law Society, the Bar Council and the Criminal Bar Association today as they submitted their responses to the Legal Services Commission's consultation paper on Best Value Tendering (BVT) for certain legal aid services.
