TfBC Final Report: The Bar Vocational Course
17 June 2008
The Training for the Bar Committee ( TfBC) of the Bar Council has produced a report setting out its view on how the Bar Vocational Course should be revised. This report will be fed into the BSB’s Wood Working Group which is currently looking at all aspects of the BVC on behalf of the BSB.
Central to the TfBC’s recommendations is a “CATVAT” approach as an alternative to the prospect of a 2:1 minimum condition of entry. This stands for Classification, Academic Transcript, Voluntary Aptitude Test. Such an approach would require a student to attain either a 2:1 degree classification or above. Those with a lower classification can still gain admission to the BVC if they can demonstrate by their Academic Transcript the attainment of a 2:1 level in each of the core law subjects and finally, if this is not possible, they should have the option of undertaking a Voluntary Aptitude Test. Further details about this model and the other recommendations of the TfBC are in the attached report.
