Anthony Speaight QC says label of Bar as a referral profession should be “decisively dumped”

At the Bar Conference session on direct access on Saturday, Anthony Speaight QC made a controversial call to the profession to stop labelling itself as a referral profession. He also made two suggestions for the profession to consider regarding funding arrangements. The full text of Anthony Speaight QC’s speech is available here.
The Access to the Bar Committee’s session, which was attended by approximately 90 barristers and other interested parties, also looked at the changes to public access which are likely to be implemented in 2010. These changes will include the removal of the restrictions preventing public access barristers working in Family, Crime and Immigration.
