Bar Charities Launch Friends in Law Scheme

11 November 2009

The Bar Pro Bono Unit and the Free Representation Unit are today launching a new scheme which will see sets of chambers encouraged to contribute to the Pro Bono work which is co-ordinated by the Units.  The scheme, called ‘Friends in Law’, has generated significant support with eight leading sets of chambers already members.

Friends in Law is an elite group of sets of chambers: each set has contributed, to the charities, by way of both financial support and pro bono work by volunteers. Huge amounts of time and expertise are involved, and the scheme reflects the increasing importance placed by the Bar on pro bono work.  Participating chambers undertake to encourage their members to do pro bono work, and candidates for pupillage and tenancy must perform a minimum amount of work  each year.

The scheme allows chambers to highlight their pro bono work on their stationery and websites.  In due course it is hoped to expand it to other strands of the legal profession.  The Units will be working with each set to tailor their support to their resources.  Membership will be reviewed annually to ensure that the scheme is operating to best effect.

Commenting on the launch of the scheme, Desmond Browne QC, the Chairman of the Bar, said:

"Friends in Law is the perfect opportunity to highlight the vital support that chambers offer the Bar's pro bono charities, both financially and through volunteers. I very much hope more sets will be encouraged to get on board before long."

Julia Hornor, the Chambers’ Director at Blackstone Chambers, a member of the Scheme, said:

“Blackstone Chambers is delighted to be a part of the Friends in Law Scheme.  The dedication of the Bar to pro bono work is incredibly impressive and of even more importance in difficult economic times.    This Scheme provides a focus and encouragement for our pupils and tenants to undertake pro bono work and underlines our Chambers’ commitment to high quality service for all.”
