Response by the Bar Council on Referral Fees

26 February 2010

The Bar Council has today made a submission to the Legal Services Consumer Panel's Call for Evidence on Referral Arrangements.  We consider that the payment of a referral fee impacts negatively upon the independence and public perception of the integrity of the legal advisors who make such payments.  Additionally, the permitting of payments of referral fees undermines the regulatory objectives in the Legal Services Act 2007.
