The 8th Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen International Law Lecture

8 March 2010

‘The case for an International Court for the Environment’

Stephen Hockman QC of Six Pump Court, former Chairman of the Bar Council will give this year's 8th Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen International Law Lecture.

The lecture is being held jointly by the United Nations Association, Westminster Branch, the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, School of African and Oriental Studies and the International Committee of the Bar Council and is also supported by Clifford Chance.

The lecture will make the case for the establishment of an international court for the environment which would regulate and sanction countries compliance with international environmental agreements. It will consider the potential benefits of such a court being established including creating an accessible forum where disputes can be resolved in a consistent manner and establishing and raising global environmental standards. A reception will follow the lecture.

The lecture will take place at 6.30pm Monday 8th March 2010. The venue is the Lecture Theatre, Brunei Gallery Building, School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, WC1H 0XG.

Stephen Hockman QC said today:

“After the failure of the Copenhagen summit, the need for institutional reform at an international level is increasingly widely recognised. I shall be considering the role that a new judicial body might play in helping to avert environmental catastrophe.”
