Bar to Consult on Court Dress

12 July 2007

Following today’s announcement by the Lord Chief Justice regarding reforms to what judges wear in court, the Bar Council has announced that it plans to consult its members before the end of July to seek their views on the Lord Chief Justice's announcement and Court dress generally.

Chairman of the Bar, Geoffrey Vos QC said:

“We note with interest the Lord Chief Justice’s proposals. This is an issue that will interest both the public and every practising barrister. We will be issuing a consultation paper before the end of July to elicit the views of the members of our profession and other interested parties, before going back to the Lord Chief Justice. We are pleased that he has allowed us time to do so by postponing the proposed implementation date to 1st January 2008.

“Court dress has always been a sensitive matter, upon which there are widely divergent views."
