From Russia With Love: Bar Woos Moscow Lawyers
14 July 2009
Barristers from the UK are heading to Moscow this week to promote the idea of settling Russian legal disputes in London.
Tonight, the Bar Council will co-host a seminar and reception in Moscow for the Russian legal profession.
The event will be held at co-hosts, the British Embassy, and is supported by the UK Trade and Investment London International Trade Team.
Two seminar sessions will take place, the first on litigating Russian-related fraud and professional liability claims in England, and the second on litigating, arbitrating and mediating disputes in England. The latter session will examine the advantages and disadvantages of each option in the context of the financial crisis.
A number of leading English barristers will be in attendance to share their expertise, and the speakers will include Rupert D’Cruz, John Powell QC and Michael Swainston QC.
The seminars will be followed by a reception, enabling leading English barristers to network with high ranking in-house counsel of large Russian corporations and Russian lawyers in private practice.
The event will provide a valuable opportunity to create greater understanding about the role of the English Bar in international dispute resolution in an important market and to forge closer links between English barristers and the Russian legal profession.
The forum comes at a time when an increasing number of Russian disputes are being litigated in the UK. The global financial crisis has also caused a rise in fraud and professional negligence cases. Among the topics being discussed will be how UK legislation is particularly suited to dealing with cases of this nature.
Commenting on the event Desmond Browne QC, Chairman of the Bar said:
‘We are delighted to be co-hosting this seminar with the British Embassy Moscow. The event provides a unique opportunity for English barristers to explain the many benefits of dispute resolution in London.
‘The Bar’s work internationally is a key part of UK plc. The seminar and reception form part of the Bar Council’s continuing efforts to promote the Bar in key jurisdictions abroad as part of our international business development strategy.’
