Wellbeing at the Young Bar: Dealing with Workplace Pressures Seminar

This is a Bar Council run or accredited event This is a Bar Council run or accredited event

Date: 29 June 2015

Time: 18:00 - 19:30

The Bar Council, 289-293 High Holborn, London WC1V 7HZ

Wellbeing, and mental health more generally, are rarely spoken about within the legal profession. Through our wellbeing campaign, we aim to dismantle the stigma associated with seeking help and to assist barristers in finding it. The Bar Council's recent research on the subject is one of the most important pieces of research it has carried out for many years.  Given the recent increased pressures on the Bar, there has never been a more important time to give this issue the attention it deserves.

This session will last for approximately 90 minutes. It will give young barristers some of the tools they might find useful in dealing with professional pressures, as well as an opportunity to inform the Bar Council how it might most usefully take the findings of its research forward for the benefit of the young Bar. The event aims for young barristers to:

  • Learn about the Bar Council's flagship research on Wellbeing and the Bar
  • Understand the importance of personal wellbeing to sustaining performance as a barrister
  • Discover some of the tools identified as being most effective in maintaining health and wellbeing
  • Learn what support is available and feel comfortable accessing it
  • Assist in rethinking the Bar's attitude and approach towards health and wellbeing, and
  • Help to build understanding and support for the profession among those with a management role.
