The Bar Council Training Scheme for young Russian and Ukrainian lawyers

The is programme was launched under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Justice of the United Kingdom.

The programme began in February 2012 when nine young Russian lawyers came to London for six weeks to participate in introductory training in the English legal system and to complete placements in chambers and law firms. The programme was organised by the Federal Chamber of Advocates, the Bar Council of England and Wales, the Law Society of England and Wales and supported by the British Russian Law Association.

The three-week programme is now succesfully organised by the Bar Council of England and Wales with the support of the Russians Bar Associations (Federal, Moscow and St Petersburg). In 2016, the programme was extended to the Ukrainian legal profession with the support of the Ukrainian National Bar Association.

Objectives

The programme aims to raise participants' understanding and awareness of how the English, Russian and Ukrainian legal systems operates, how the legal profession in the host country functions and how to work most effectively with colleagues from the other jurisdiction. It will enable participants to develop valuable contacts and assist them in building a successful international legal practice.

In addition the programme aims to build a build a network of lawyers which may form the foundation of other projects (e.g. business development missions or professional seminars).
