With the Ministry of Justice about to announce its position on the 'Transforming legal aid: next steps' consultation, we are intending to bring the whole Bar together on the morning of Saturday 8 February to address the harmful effects of the Government's changes to legal aid.  It is a matter of concern not only to legal aid practitioners but to the whole profession that:

  • Access to justice is being eroded
  • The quality of our justice system is under threat
  • False economies are likely to lead to more delay, more cost and more miscarriages of justice, and
  • This in turn harms the international reputation of our legal system.

Please come and give us your support.

We are currently finalising our list of speakers, but you will hear from representatives across the profession, including:

  • The Chairman of the Bar Council

  • Nigel Lithman QC, Criminal Bar Association

  • Paul Harris, EFBW Solicitors (former President of the LCCSA)

  • Timothy Fancourt QC, Chancery Bar Association

  • Sarah Forshaw QC, South-Eastern Circuit

  • Hannah Evans, third six pupil at 23 Essex Street

  • The Family Law Bar Association

  • The Constitutional and Administrative Law Bar Association, and

  • The Circuits.

Please see our invitation with the event details and how to register. Please do send this on far and wide to your colleagues.

It will be an opportunity for the whole Bar to make its voice heard on issues which are vitally important to the society we serve.

Best wishes,

Nicholas Lavender QC
Chairman of the Bar
