Parliamentary Update 2020

Keep up to date on the Bar Council's work in ensuring justice and the interests of the profession are represented and heard in Parliament.

Parliamentary Update: April 2020

Despite Parliament not sitting, Select Committees have continued to scrutinise the work of Government during the Covid-19 public health emergency. The Justice Select Committee has held two hearings with the Lord Chancellor, and the Bar Council has briefed members of the Committee, including the Chair Sir Bob Neill MP, about our concerns regarding the sustainability of the Bar and urgent need for financial support. Sir Bob has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer raising our concerns about the need for Government financial assistance for the Bar, citing evidence from our recent survey of chambers across the Bar.

Following the recent election of Sir Keir Starmer as Leader of the Opposition and the announcement of his new Shadow frontbench, the Bar Council has had virtual meetings with the Shadow Justice Secretary David Lammy MP, the Shadow Attorney General Lord Falconer QC and the Shadow Solicitor General Ellie Reeves MP.
