IBA Annual Conference 2019 - Seoul

The Bar Council attended the 2019 International Bar Association's (IBA) Annual Conference in Seoul, led by Chair of the Bar, Richard Atkins QC.

This year we had an exhibition stall, which proved popular, with many visitors stopping by to learn more about the how to become a barrister and  the international services  supplied by our members.

We also held the traditional 'four bars' joint networking reception with the three other bars of the United Kingdom, The Faculty of Advocates in Scotland, The Bar of Northern Ireland and the Bar of Ireland

We further used the opportunity to hold a joint seminar in international arbitration  with our friends at the Korean Bar Association (KBA), with whom we have a long and close history, building on our joint young lawyers' exchange scheme.

This event, followed by a networking reception was attended by c. 70 Korean practitioners, who were eager to meet with  our members.

The event was opened by the KBA president, Chan Hee Lee and Bar Council Chair, Richard Atkins QC. The discussion was led by Deok Jo Rhee QC, Member of the Bar Council's international Committee (and first silk of South Korean nationality); Sam Karim QC of Kings Chambers, and Angeline Welsh of Matrix Chambers. All provided much welcomed practical insight into conducting arbitrations in London.
