Naomi Madderson

1.      Where do you practise?

I practise on the North Eastern circuit

2.      What area do you specialise in?

I specialise in family law namely care, private law and Court of Protection work

3.      What was your route into the profession?

I came straight from University with a law degree to Bar School to 37 Park Square Chambers.

4.      What attracted you to the Bar?

The independence. The notion of wanting to help people. My mum completed Jury Service not so long back and recounted how in her view all we (as barristers) seem to deal with are people with problems. I suppose she's right. I like the fact that in some way it feels as though we are trying to help them at a difficult period in their lives.

5.      What is the best thing about your career?

The variety of every day life, new challenges and different people

6.      What is the worst thing about your career?

The work at the end of the day when you know your day isn't over!

7.      What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring barrister?

Simple and clichéd I'm afraid! Don't stop believing in yourself. When I was completing mini pupillage's I was told on countless occasions that there was no future in the Bar and to go and be a Solicitor instead. Needless to say whilst the competition is as ferocious as it has ever been, the Bar is still thriving ….
