Law Reform Essay Competition 2019

The annual competition aimed at fostering interest in law reform among aspiring barristers

This year's Law Reform Essay competition is open to anyone undertaking the academic or vocational stage of training for the Bar (including those studying for a qualifying law degree, GDL or BPTC) and those in the process of transferring to the Bar.

The competition invites entrants to submit a 3,000 word essay making the case for a reform to English, Welsh or European law.

The competition is generously sponsored by the Bar Council Scholarship Trust and offers prizes of: 

  • £4,000 for the winner

  • £2,500 for the runner up

  • £1,500 for the best GDL entry

  • £1,000 for the runner up GDL entry

  • 2 x £500 highly commended awards.             

All awards will be presented at the Bar Council's Law Reform Lecture on 27 November 2019 at The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn.

The deadline date for entries is 17:00 on Friday 27 September 2019.
