9KBW is a London based set, situated in Inner Temple, with 27 members, and three pupils, who all specialise in Criminal Law. Many have a mixed practice combining Regulatory, Animal Protection and Extradition Law with their criminal practice.
We do have a small number of members who have expertise in Immigration Law and if an applicant wished to pursue this area of law as part of their practice, we will assist them in doing so.
Several junior members regularly undertake disclosure, document review and LPP work for the SFO, NCA, Government Legal Department AG's List (GLD) bank of England and a number of criminal defence firms.
Chambers undertakes a considerable amount of Regulatory work for the Nursing & Midwifery Council, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, the General Dental Council, the General Medical Council, the General Pharmaceutical Council, and the Health and Safety Executive.
Chambers has a growing number of members who specialise in Animal Protection cases and in defending clients charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act and the Animal Welfare Act
As a Chambers we prosecute and defend in criminal cases at the highest level including cases for the Specialist Crime Groups dealing with Organised and Serious Crime, Serious Sexual offences, Specialist Fraud, including high level SFO matters, and Extradition matters. Our main areas of practice are in London and the South East.
Members frequently appear as Leading Juniors, or are led by QC or by Senior Counsel, and many are instructed in multiple high profile cases attracting national media attention.
Probationary Tenants and Pupils are able to assist with and observe these high profile matters and are actively encouraged to do so.

About the candidate:

t 9 KBW we provide great opportunities to our probationary tenants, that will enable them to build a practice that they can enjoy and be proud of from the outset, and that will bring not only the desired financial reward but repeat instructions at an ever growing level of weight, complexity and diversity.
In return for this we expect our probationary tenants to be very hard working and to demonstrate a keen interest in the law and to showcase the knowledge to match that interest.
We expect all of our members, at every level, to provide first class client care on every occasion. Our standards are exceptionally high and we ask that everyone in Chambers strives to meet those standards.
We are a highly supportive set and we want our pupils to join in the knowledge that membership of 9KBW is to be a member of a close knit, very supportive community of barristers and staff alike. We work towards a common goal, which is the provision of exceptional service to our clients and the progression of the career of everyone at 9 KBW.
Probationary Tenants are expected to earn a minimum of £50,000 to £75,000 annually, but it is anticipated that most will receive an income at a substantially higher level, from both Crime and Regulatory work.
We encourage all probationary tenants, if they have not already done so, to apply for Advocate Panels and our experienced Managing Consultant and clerking team will always assist those keen to do so, in both gaining the necessary experience and in the completion of the application process. Our success rate in these applications is consistently very high, as can be seen from the news items on our website.
Our probationary tenants and 2nd six pupils appear in the Crown Courts on a daily basis, both prosecuting and defending. All are all given ample opportunity to undertake a high level of Crown Court work, including Jury Trials.
All probationary tenancies are offered with a view to full tenancy, and we encourage and support our probationers, at all stages, to develop their skills and expertise, in order to make that a reality.
Probationary tenants are usually encouraged to make an application, dependent upon individual progress, after three months. An application is made to the Tenancy and Pupillage Committee, who will then meet to assess the application and to interview the applicant. Either an advocacy exercise or a written work exercise may also be requested.
We provide a regular programme of advocacy exercises for all of our pupils, probationary tenants and very junior members, giving all an opportunity to develop trial advocacy skills and expertise.
One of our regulatory experts also provides in house training for those wishing to undertake regulatory work for the NMC.
We firmly believe that Chambers has a responsibility to nurture young talented professionals and to encourage commitment, ambition and dedication from the earliest stage, with tenancy being the result of demonstrating such qualities.
Our pupils and probationary tenants are thoroughly immersed in life in Chambers, both professionally and socially, with regular opportunities to take part in our renowned OIC Roadshow and Mock Trial programmes training police officers. Members meet socially on regular occasions, and we have two Whatsapp groups, one of which is purely for the junior members, probationary tenants and pupils. Through these groups members can raise any questions they may have generally or request guidance on case law, or practical steps to be taken in a case. We are an extremely inclusive and supportive set, both professionally and personally, and all members at one time or another, whatever their seniority, has used one of the groups to ask for advice or guidance from others with specific knowledge of an area of law.
Chambers has a handbook and specific policy for probationary tenants, both of which are available on request to Christine Eadie as are many other policies relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, as detailed on our website.
