About your chambers:

Chambers currently has four vacancies for Probationary Tenants with experience predominantly in Crime or Regulatory work.
If you are looking for a highly regarded set of Criminal and Regulatory Chambers, where you will be extraordinarily busy and where you can develop a solid and extensive practice, then we welcome your application.

As our workload is ever increasing we can offer all of our probationers, present and future, the widest possible experience in criminal, regulatory, animal protection and potentially extradition work at a later stage.

9KBW is a London based set with 31 members, two current probationary tenants and three pupils ,who all specialise in Crime and many in Regulatory law. Our members also undertake work in Animal Protection and Extradition Law.

Chambers has an exceptional clerking and administration team, led by Dave Fardon, Chambers highly experienced Senior Clerk. We also have one of the most experienced managing Consultants in Christine Eadie, who manages the regulatory and administrative side of Chambers business.

As a Chambers we prosecute and defend in criminal cases at the highest level including cases for the Specialist Crime Groups dealing with Organised and Serious Crime, Serious Sexual Offences, Specialist Fraud, including high level SFO matters, and Extradition matters. Our main areas of practice are in London and the South East but we do have members who practice almost entirely on other circuits and we can accommodate this seamlessly.

Members frequently appear as Leading Juniors, or are led by QC or by Senior Counsel and many are instructed in multiple high profile cases attracting national media attention.

Probationary Tenants and Pupils are able to assist with and observe these high profile matters and are actively encouraged to do so.

Members are regularly instructed in a range of cases involving breaches of the regulatory requirements and serious quasi-criminal / regulatory allegations such as sexual misconduct in the workplace, mental health and fatalities and due to our overarching expertise in both criminal and regulatory law, members have been instructed to advise and represent professional regulatory bodies and individuals alike. Instructions have ranged from advice and representation, not only within regulatory proceedings where there is a criminal crossover, but also with regards to independent criminal prosecutions.

Several of our members were qualified solicitors, who transferred to the Bar and who retain their Police Station Accreditation and continue to work with clients at police stations and on pre-charge advice.

Members of Chambers are also regularly instructed in wider regulatory issues revolving around Local Authorities, Education & Social Care, Health & Safety, Fire Safety, Environmental issues and referrals to CJEU (Court of Justice of the European Union). 

A small number of Chambers members have in the past undertake specialist Immigration work appearing in cases in the lower tier of the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal through to the Court of Appeal. If a probationary tenant wishes to include immigration work in their practice, we encourage this and have members and an experienced senior clerk, who can provide advice and support to anyone wishing to build a practice in this area of work. Several junior members regularly undertake disclosure, document review and LPP work for the SFO, NCA, Government Legal Department AG's List (GLD) bank of England and a number of criminal defence firms.

Chambers undertakes a considerable amount of Regulatory work for the Nursing & Midwifery Council, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, the General Dental Council, the General Medical Council the General Pharmaceutical Council, and the Health and Safety Executive.

About the candidate:

All probationary tenancies are offered with a view to tenancy, after a short probationary period of generally three months. All of our Probationary Tenants, in recent years, have been offered and have accepted Tenancy. We encourage all probationary tenants, if they have not already done so, to apply for Advocate Panels, and our experienced Managing Consultant and clerking team will always assist those keen to do so, in both gaining the necessary experience at the level aspired to, and in the completion of the application process. Our success rate in these applications is consistently very high for every grade and for specialist panels,, as can be seen from the news items on our website. Our pupils are always encouraged to apply to the Advocate Panel, shortly after they commence their second six, and we have a very high success rate, with all of the pupils in the last three years having been successful in their applications.

Our probationary tenants and 2nd six pupils appear in the Crown Courts on a daily basis, both prosecuting and defending. All are all given ample opportunity to undertake a high level of Crown Court work, including Jury Trials at a very early stage of their practice. Probationary tenants will be given every assistance by the clerking team to build a practice, from day 1, with 9 KBW, and can expect that, by the end of a three month period, they will be looking at a fee turnover in excess of £7,000 a month.

If an application for tenancy is successful, they can anticipate an income of between £85,000 to £120,000 by the end of their first 12 months as a tenant and some will receive an income at a substantially higher level, from both Crime and Regulatory work.

Our training and support, by supervisors and other members of Chambers is exceptional and includes advocacy exercises where probationary tenants are invited to participate to broaden their experience.

Each probationary tenant will be assigned a qualified person for ongoing support, We have various Whatsapp groups; designated for Work or Social discussions, including one specifically for only the junior end.

Probationary Tenants will have the opportunity to undertake training for the Nursing & Midwifery Council and thereafter to be instructed by them as well as to apply for the Junior Junior GLD panel. Probationary tenants are usually encouraged to make an application, dependent upon individual progress, after three months. An application is made to the Tenancy and Pupillage Committee, who will then meet to assess the application and to interview the applicant. A written work exercise may also be requested.

We provide a regular programme of advocacy exercises for all of our pupils, probationary tenants and very junior members, giving all an opportunity to develop trial advocacy skills and expertise.One of our regulatory experts provides in house training to probationary tenants and pupils on work for the Nursing and Midwifery Council. During 2026 we are offering four probationary tenancies at any given time, in addition to the two who are already in practice, and three new pupils will start their 12 month funded pupillages in October 2026.

Our pupils and probationary tenants are thoroughly immersed in life in Chambers, both professionally and socially, with regular opportunities to meet with other members at both social and training events.
