The Bar Council has marked the 6-year anniversary of the Women in Law Pledge alongside the Law Society and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).

The Women in Law Pledge was created to help tackle the issue of women's equality within the legal profession.

Bar Council Chair Barbara Mills KC said: “Since the initiation of the pledge, great strides have been taken to make impactful progress on women’s equality at the Bar.

“The picture has changed enormously over the years - women have now occupied almost all the important spaces. This year, for the first time in the Bar Council’s 132-year history, we have an all-female leadership team. And about time too.

“While the presence of women in law has grown, true equity remains a work in progress. Disparities persist with respect to earnings and opportunities for career progression, particularly for women of colour.

"The journey toward a truly inclusive legal profession requires ongoing commitment and focus. The pledge supports chambers by providing a framework for action and accountability; it requires chambers set goals and tell us how they are doing. And we are delighted to be working with over 36 leading sets who have already signed the pledge.

"I hope that in the next 6 years and beyond, more chambers will sign the pledge, and those chambers we are already working with will continue to see progress and find the pledge a useful tool for driving action.”
