Commenting on the news of the death of human rights lawyer Ebru Timtik this morning in TurkeyAmanda Pinto QC, Chair of the Bar, said:

“I read with great sadness the news that Ebru Timtik has died after her courageous stand against the unfair trial and judicial processes which put her and her 17 colleagues in jail in Turkey last year.

"The Bar Council of England and Wales will always speak out at injustices visited upon lawyers around the world who are punished simply for doing their job.

"We call on the Turkish courts and authorities to recognise the miscarriages of justice which have led to Ebru’s death and the imprisonment of her colleagues. We continue to support and monitor the case of Aytaç Ünsal (who remains on hunger strike) and the other lawyers who are still in prison."
