Change on diversity cannot come soon enough, says Bar Council

Responding to the BSB’s Diversity at the Bar report, Chair of the Bar Council, Derek Sweeting QC said: “This report shows that diversity at the Bar is inching in the right direction, but we urgently need to make greater strides. It is crucial that the Bar maintains momentum, particularly towards improving the situation around race, and accelerates progress towards a diverse profession at all levels.

“We continue to work, through our Race Working Group, as well as our Equality, Diversity and Social Mobility Committee and other panels, to help the Bar with practical guidance, training and tools to break down barriers and improve representation in chambers and other organisations.

“Barristers play a key role in our justice system and must collectively reflect the society they represent. Significant change cannot come soon enough.”
