In an historic move, the Bar Council of India has announced amendments to its regulations that will, for the first time, permit foreign lawyers to practice in India under specific conditions.

Barbara Mills KC, Chair of the Bar Council, said: "The Bar Council of England and Wales has worked closely with the Bar Council of India, and we welcome the revised rules which will help India position itself to become a significant centre for international arbitration.

"Multi-national companies, including many of those from and with headquarters in India, with very substantial commercial and other disputes, like and expect the flexibility, autonomy and control that international alternative dispute resolution processes allow to them. The rules will allow English and Welsh barristers to provide this service.

“This collaboration between UK and Indian legal professionals will bring mutual benefits, enhancing the quality and efficiency of legal services in both countries.”
