This foundation course, delivered by experienced practising mediators from the Society of Mediators. This course is a key step towards qualification as a civil and commercial mediator and is accredited by the Civil Mediation Council, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and the Bar Council, amongst others.

This course is suitable for anyone who has an interest in learning more about mediation, whether they intend to practice as a mediator themselves or simply use the skills learned within their own existing roles. No previous knowledge or understanding of alternative dispute resolution or the law is required as all essential elements will be covered on the course.

You'll undertake both theory and practical elements during this intensive, week-long course and will be required to undergo both an assessed simulated mediation and written examination.

Assessment and examination
Every delegate undergoes assessment, including an independently marked open-book examination to ensure consistent standards.
Barristers also benefit from continuous evaluation throughout the programme, culminating in a final assessed mediation conducted by experienced, independent assessors - none of whom have taught on the course - ensuring impartiality and rigour.
In the event of the required standard not being met, barristers will be invited back for further work and assessment at no additional cost.

After the course
Successful completion will result in certification as a mediator subject to undertaking the three mediation observations. Uniquely, as a charity, the Society provides these for free. The CMC and other panel requirements may differ.
- You’ll be a certified mediator, recognised by the Society of Mediators
- You’ll be accredited as a civil and commercial mediator by the Civil Mediation Council
- You’ll be recognised as a mediator by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb)
- You’ll have access to a confidential helpline to help with challenges, sample policies and agreements, a peer mentoring system and development advice from skilled tutors
