Who is this course for?
Practising barristers who wish to undertake public access work.
To undertake this course, you must:
- Hold a full practising certificate
If you have less than three years’ of practice, you’ll need to nominate a more experienced barrister (qualified person) who can provide you with guidance on public access work. The qualified person needs to be registered for public access with our Barrister Records office.

What will I learn?
Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll understand:
- What public access is and where it fits into the current regulatory and commercial environment
- How to review the application of all the regulatory framework rules and how they should be applied risk sensitively
- What additional resources, systems and processes will be needed to effectively support your public access practice and your public access clients
- The risks inherent within a public access matter/case and how to manage and mitigate those risks
- How to develop an empathetic and positive relationship with a public access client to deliver their objectives and manage their expectations
- How to develop a clear personal public access business plan and model to maximise opportunities and ensure profitability
After the course
- You’ll have everything you need to apply to extend your practising certificate with the BSB to undertake public access work and register as as a public access barrister with the Bar Council Records Office
- You’ll have access to resources such as template client letters, guidance documents and a workbook specific to our course to support your public access practice
- Create a profile on our Direct Access Portal (if you are a Bar Representation Fee subscriber). This is a popular website for members of the public, professionals and organisations to find barristers directly that receives over 1,500 enquiries per month
