What is the Bar Representation Fee ('BRF')

The Bar Representation Fee (BRF) provides essential funding for the vital campaigning work and representative work of the Bar Council.

Some of these services for students and junior members of the Bar include:

  • Pupillage Fair allows students looking towards a career at the Bar to meet with a number of key representatives from chambers, course providers and SBAs, as well as previous pupils who will be able to offer advice and tips.

  • Career days are aimed at Year 12 students who are interested in learning about studying law at university and a career at the Bar. This event is carried out in state schools across England and Wales.

  • Pupils' Helpline gives confidential advice to members of the Bar who are currently undertaking Pupillage. An experienced or independent barrister is available to assist with any issues during Pupillage.

  • Young Bar Hub and Young Bar Toolkit provides support to barristers in their early years of practice and also addresses key issues that are relevant to the Young Bar. This includes advice on building and managing a practice or financial affairs and much more.

All BRF funds are used exclusively for representative activities to support the profession. The BRF does not fund any of the commercial work carried out by the Bar Council, which is in itself a further source of funding that has allowed us to freeze the BRF payment for many years.

How to pay the BRF?

The annual BRF fee is £24 per year and can be paid in two ways; via Direct Debit of £2 per month or by the annual fee of £24 per year.
