During the authorisation to practise period, you will have the opportunity to subscribe to the Bar Council’s Bar Representation Fee (BRF).
In 2025 the BRF supported the Bar Council to carry out important work across the profession including Baroness Harriet Harman KC’s independent review of bullying and harassment, the ethical enquiries service, earnings research and engaging with decision makers on issues such as Crown Court backlogs, reform of the family justice system and fees and regulation.

Remember to renew your practising certificate during this year’s authorisation to practise (AtP).
During AtP you will also be able to subscribe to the Bar Council’s Bar Representation Fee (BRF).
In 2025, funding from the BRF went towards:
- Commissioning and implementing Baroness Harriet Harman KC’s Independent Review into bullying, harassment and sexual harassment
- Supporting more than 5,000 enquiries to the ethical enquiries service
- Revisions on AI guidance for barristers
- Engaging with decision makers on issues including opposition to restricting jury trials, reform of family justice to tackle VAWG, and access to justice
- Supplying 10,778 members with ID cards to reduce court queuing times
- Piloting new wellbeing initiatives to support the profession
