Bar Mock Trials

The Bar Mock Trials offer students the opportunity to experience mock court cases. This is an excellent opportunity for students from state schools to:

  • Build their CVs
  • Develop their public speaking and debating skills
  • Network with other students and barristers

The Bar Council is a proud sponsor of the Young Citizens' Bar Mock Trial initiative. Since 1991, the scheme has enabled thousands of young people from state schools across the country to compete in mock criminal trials in real courts.

The competition runs once per year, and each year involves:

  • Over 2,000 students from years 10 to 13
  • Over 200 barristers and advocates
  • 90 judges

For more information on Bar Mock Trials, visit the Young Citizens website.

Barristers who wish to volunteer as a team mentor, competition judge, local organiser or another role crucial to the competition can fill out the online form. Read more about volunteering at the Bar Mock Trials in this blog by family law barrister Poppy Sparrow, or about the importance of the competition in Counsel magazine.

"The Bar Mock Trials are a brilliant day. I recalled to the students that it was winning a mock trial that enabled me to believe that I could be a barrister - and maybe even a good one!
"Social mobility always has been one of my focuses, so it’s powerful to connect with those who do this every day."
