Bar Mock Trials

The Bar Mock Trials offer students the opportunity to experience mock court cases. This is an excellent opportunity for students from state schools to:

  • Build their CVs
  • Develop their public speaking and debating skills
  • Network with other students and barristers

The Bar Council is a proud sponsor of the Young Citizens' Bar Mock Trial initiative. Since 1991, the scheme has enabled thousands of young people from state schools across the country to compete in mock criminal trials in real courts.

The competition runs once per year; each year involves:

  • Over 2,000 students from years 10 to 13;
  • Over 200 barristers and advocates; and
  • 90 judges.

"It is marvellous to see the dedication and commitment of the pupils taking part in this competition and that of their teachers. I hope that the competition inspires many of those taking part to consider a career at the Bar. The Bar Council of England and Wales is proud to support the competition."
Richard Atkins KC, Bar Council Chair, 2019
