About the event

This free event will open with a keynote address from Sam Townend KC, former Chair of the Bar Council. A panel discussion will follow exploring the ethical, legal and practical considerations involved when mediators adopt an evaluative role.

There will be an opportunity for audience questions, with a drinks reception to follow.

Samuel Townend KC, Barrister at Keating Chambers, former Chair of the Bar Council

Keynote address

Samuel Townend KC is the former Chair of the Bar Council and barrister at Keating Chambers. Samuel is regularly appointed as Arbitrator and Adjudicator and has acted as Mediator in domestic, international and remote mediations. He also regularly acts as mediation and negotiation advocate, in addition to being counsel in court and arbitration.

Shobana Iyer, Barrister at Swan Chambers

Chair/moderator of the panel

Shobana Iyer is a practicing barrister, an accredited arbitrator and mediator, with over 20 years specialising in commercial dispute resolution. Shobana is a Vice-Chair of the Bar Council’s Legal Services Committee, which oversees the Bar Council’s IT, ADR and Direct Access Panels.

Spenser Hilliard is Chair of the Bar Council’s ADR Panel, a member of the Judicial ADR Liaison Committee and has over four decades of experience in litigation and alternative dispute resolution. Spenser now practises exclusively as a mediator.

James Roberts KC, Barrister at 1 King's Bench Walk

James Roberts KC is the immediate past Chair of the Family Law Bar Association. He was involved from the outset in introducing arbitration to family financial remedy and then children litigation and is a founding Board member of the Institute of Family Law Arbitrators (IFLA). He has been a mediator for over 15 years and has conducted well over 100 early neutral evaluations in financial remedy cases.
