Who is this course for?

Practising barristers who wish to conduct litigation. 

To take this course, you must hold a full practising certificate.

If you are a self-employed or an employed barrister, you must have:

  • Undertaken BSB approved public access training and registered with the BSB to accept instruction from public access clients
  • Significant litigation experience and intend to apply for a waiver from the public access training requirement

What will I learn?

Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll:

  • Understand the BSB requirements to conduct litigation
  • Be in a position to develop procedures and case management practices to support a successful litigation practice. These include:
    • Efficient onboarding procedures and processes for clients and which protect your time
    • Drafting client care letters which are both regulatory compliant and balance contractual risk
    • Arranging flexible fee structures to enable you to litigate smoothly
    • Checklists for all stages of the litigation process
  • Learn how to identify potential professional risks arising when litigating cases and how to mitigate these
  • Develop strategies for excellence in client care
  • Understand the duties owed to litigants in person and Mckenzie Friends
  • Balance your business model for the conduct of litigation alongside your professional instructions and public access cases
  • Know how to apply for your practising certificate extension

After the course

  • You’ll have everything you need to apply to the BSB to extend your practising certificate 
  • You’ll have access to resources such as guidelines and advice to carry out litigation in public access cases
