Who is this course for?
Practising barristers who wish to conduct litigation.
To take this course, you must hold a full practising certificate.
If you are a self-employed or an employed barrister, you must have:
- Undertaken BSB approved public access training and registered with the BSB to accept instruction from public access clients
- Significant litigation experience and intend to apply for a waiver from the public access training requirement
What will I learn?
Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll:
- Understand the BSB requirements to conduct litigation
- Be in a position to develop procedures and case management practices to support a successful litigation practice. These include:
- Efficient onboarding procedures and processes for clients and which protect your time
- Drafting client care letters which are both regulatory compliant and balance contractual risk
- Arranging flexible fee structures to enable you to litigate smoothly
- Checklists for all stages of the litigation process
- Learn how to identify potential professional risks arising when litigating cases and how to mitigate these
- Develop strategies for excellence in client care
- Understand the duties owed to litigants in person and Mckenzie Friends
- Balance your business model for the conduct of litigation alongside your professional instructions and public access cases
- Know how to apply for your practising certificate extension
After the course
- You’ll have everything you need to apply to the BSB to extend your practising certificate
- You’ll have access to resources such as guidelines and advice to carry out litigation in public access cases
