The Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) offers a highly successful approach to Bar training, designed to equip students with the knowledge and vital practitioner skills required to secure pupillage and to fulfil their ambition to become successful practising barristers.

The ICCA Bar Course is delivered in two parts using a combination of in-person teaching, e-learning and self-study. Applications open on 12 October 2026 for courses commencing in September 2027 and January 2028.

Advocate is the Bar’s national pro bono charity.  They match members of the public who need free legal assistance with barristers across England and Wales who generously donate their time and expertise in deserving cases where individuals are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay. The Free Representation Unit is a pro bono legal charity. We provide one of the few opportunities to deliver advocacy in real legal cases prior to qualification. 

FRU volunteers represent clients in social security, employment and criminal injuries compensation appeal tribunals. Our volunteers are trainined and  supported by a team of paid legal officers to take ownership of all aspects of case preparation and advocacy at the tribunal hearing.

FRU volunteers gain experience in case strategy, client care, legal research, drafting of witness statements, schedules of loss and submissions, case file preparation, settlement negotiation and oral advocacy.
