Pupil barristers
The third and final stage to joining the Bar is the work-based component or pupillage. This is divided into your first six (non-practising) and your second six (practising). There is comprehensive advice and guidance in our ‘Becoming a Barrister’ brochure.
You should browse our pages to find out more information about support and information for pupil barristers available from the Bar Council.
COVID-19 UPDATE: We are conscious that this is very disruptive and unsettling time for pupils, and you may be concerned about what is happening with your training programme and/or your pupillage award. We are currently exploring support options, and the BSB has released some guidance about pupillages that you find useful. If there is anything you want to raise with us with regard to your pupillage, please get in touch on 020 7611 1415 or email PupilHelpline@BarCouncil.org.uk.
Since September 2019, the minimum funding award for pupillage has increased to £18,436 per year for pupillages in London and £15,728 per year for pupillages outside London. There will also be some ways in which the work-based/pupillage component will change in the next few years:
- Pupils will be assessed in line with requirements set out in the Professional Statement for Barristers (for further information, please see <here>)
- From December 2021, the first new Professional Ethics centralised assessment will take place and will be sat during pupillage / the work-based learning component rather than during the vocational component
The Inns of Court are an invaluable source of support during your pupillage year. Not only do they provide specific training and guidance, but they offer a sense of community and can offer financial support in some circumstances.
If you would like to find further information about being a pupil at each Inn of Court, you can browse their websites.
