Welcome to the Bar Council’s Pupillage Fair.
The Bar Council is proud to deliver a Pupillage Fair that is fit for the future. Last year, we successfully held the Pupillage Fair online in the face of a challenging year for many barrister hopefuls. This year, we are taking the best of virtual and in-person formats, to ensure that information is accessible, and prospective barristers can network and build connections effectively.
To that end, the Bar Council is delighted to welcome you to the in-person fair and application clinic on Saturday 15 October, as well as a range of targeted webinars during 11-13 October, several of which will be delivered by Specialist Bar Associations and the Inns of Court. The Bar Council is here to support you, both now and during your career at the Bar in the future, and we hope that this approach will allow you to get the most out of the fair in a way that suits you.
The fair is part of the Bar Council’s student advisory and support services, which are designed to support you when making decisions about the academic, vocational and work-based components of training for the Bar. Other support programmes include:
- Providing up-to-date information and guidance about your options on the Bar Council website
- Running Bar Placement Week for students who meet the qualifying criteria
- Arranging attendance at a number of university law fairs to give you the opportunity to engage with the Inns of Court and practising barristers
- Running the Pupillage Gateway to ensure that you have an easy-to-use platform for your applications
- Providing the Pupillage Helpline to support you during pupillage
- Working with the profession to ensure that our approach to recruitment is fair at every stage, and that training is accessible and maintains high professional standards
The profession is committed to supporting determined prospective barristers from all backgrounds to pursue a career at the Bar. We hope that the Pupillage Fair helps you achieve your career goals.
I would like to wish you the very best of luck. We look forward to welcoming you to a fulfilling and rewarding career at the Bar of England and Wales.

The Inns of Court are key institutions for the Bar, and every barrister must be a member of one of them. There are four Inns - Gray's Inn, Inner Temple, Lincoln's Inn, and Middle Temple - and students join before beginning the vocational component of becoming a barrister. They have a central role in the education of young barristers and oversight over several parts of becoming a barrister. Additionally, they are also the Bar’s largest scholarship providers, awarding approximately £6m to aspiring barristers each year.
