Thriving in your first years of practice: developing international practice

Tadhgh is a family law barrister at 1KBW, London, specialising in complex international children and financial proceedings, including child abduction, relocation applications, forum disputes, and cases with multi-national/global asset portfolios.

Tadhgh won Young Barrister of the Year at the 2024 Family Law Awards and has been awarded multiple scholarships including: the Pegasus Scholarship to the American Inns of Court (2022), the Florida Bar Advanced Trial Advocacy Programme (2024), the Anglo-Dutch Legal Exchange (2024), and the Advanced Trial Advocacy Course at Keble College, Oxford (2025).

Tadhgh is listed in both the Legal 500 as a ‘Rising Star’ and in Chambers & Partners as “Up & Coming” for both Matrimonial Finance and Children Law. He has published articles in both the International Family Law Journal and the Financial Remedies Journal and is an advocacy trainer for Lincoln’s Inn. Tadhgh is also a member of the Young Barristers’ Committee at the Bar Council.

Jelia Sané is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, practising in international law and immigration and asylum law. She is admitted to the List of Counsel of the International Criminal Court and was jointly named International Pro Bono Barrister of the Year in 2019 for her work.

Jelia's international practice is focused around criminal law and human rights law and includes victim and claimant representation before international courts and tribunals, human rights and criminal investigations, policy-oriented research, and training and capacity-building. Recent and ongoing instructions include representing victims of the Rohingya genocide before the International Criminal Court; conducting a two-year investigation in the Congo into alleged human rights abuses by national park rangers against indigenous populations; and advising investigators and prosecutors in Ukraine on conflict-related crimes against and affecting children.

Between 2020 and 2022, Jelia was the Senior Legal Adviser at All Survivors Project, a human rights NGO working on accountability for conflict-related sexual violence against men and boys.

Prior to joining Doughty Street, Jelia worked for a number of international organisations and NGOs, including the International Criminal Court, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, the Centre for Justice and International Law in Argentina and the Political Prisoners' Solidarity Committee in Colombia.

Fahrid Chishty is a barrister at 33 Chambers, specialising in financial crime, asset recovery, sanctions, and commercial disputes. 

Alongside his London practice, Fahrid has developed a particular focus on the Middle East, having advised and represented international clients, including governments, business conglomerate, diplomatic missions and HNWIs (high-net-worth-individuals) across the region. 

Fahrid is a member of the Bar Council’s International Committee and Young Barristers’ Committee, and was also an Inns of Court Pegasus Scholar in Pakistan in 2023-24, where his work focused on procedural law reform.

Kirsty Sutherland is a barrister at 9 Bedford Row Chambers, specialising in international criminal law and military law. Her practice has included work before international criminal tribunals, including the International Criminal Court and the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, as well as a number of high-profile UK military trials. She was also a Visiting Fellow of Practice at the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, reflecting her wider engagement with international justice and armed conflict. 

Kirsty has held significant leadership roles within the international legal community. She is currently Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s War Crimes Committee and has chaired and participated in panels at the IBA’s international conferences addressing accountability, international criminal justice and the role of lawyers in responding to armed conflict. She is also a member of the Bar Council’s International Committee, giving her extensive experience of international professional networks and opportunities relevant to developing an international practice at the Young Bar.

Amelia Clegg is a barrister at Outer Temple Chambers, practising in business crime and regulatory law, and is dual-qualified at the Bar of England and Wales and as a New York attorney. Having practised as both a self-employed and employed barrister and on both sides of the Atlantic, Amelia has developed a broad perspective on legal practice and international career development. Her international experience includes practising across the UK and US legal environments, providing insight into the opportunities and challenges of developing a career with an international dimension.

Amelia is Chair of the Bar Council’s Young Barristers’ Committee for 2026, having previously served as Vice Chair in 2025. Through the Young Barristers’ Committee, she has been closely involved in promoting career development opportunities for barristers in their first seven years of practice. In 2026, she also led the Young Bar delegation on the Anglo-Dutch Exchange, strengthening connections between the English and Dutch legal professions. Her combination of Young Bar leadership, international experience and dual qualification makes her particularly relevant to a webinar focused on helping young barristers understand and access international practice.
