Bar Council business development missions

Purpose of missions

Bar Council business development missions aim to raise the profile of barristers and the legal services they provide in agreed priority legal markets or at selected international conferences. These missions present opportunities for participating barristers to learn about the legal markets of the visited jurisdiction and to network with local lawyers and other potential clients. These visits also give the Bar Council a chance to discuss opportunities for collaboration in legal training and the development of the rule of law with local lawyers and governmental bodies.

Structure of missions

The missions usually take place over the course of a week and typically include seminars with local lawyers, meetings with local professional bodies, chambers of commerce, government as well as law firms and networking events such as drinks receptions, business breakfasts and lunches.

I emailed some of the contacts made on the Bar Council visit back in 2009. Almost without exception, I have had warm emails in response, inviting me to meetings, lunch etc. Quite extraordinary after a lapse of 6-7 years!!

Participation in missions

Depending on the type of mission, participants are recruited via Specialist Bar Associations or directly through advertisements to the profession in Counsel, on this website or communications to chambers. Missions advertised to the profession at large are also open to marketing staff of chambers.
