Life at the Bar webinars programme

Representatives from each of the Inns of Court outline the opportunities and support that they offer aspiring barristers.

This session is run in partnership with the Inns of Court: Middle Temple, Lincoln’s Inn, Gray’s Inn and Inner Temple.

Junior and senior barristers, from leading Chancery and commercial sets, will talk about their working lives, the skills required to succeed in their areas, and key developments in the sector. This targeted session is suited to aspiring barristers who are interested in commercial or Chancery practice. 

This session is run with the support of the Chancery Bar Association, and the Commercial Bar Association. 

Barristers from leading family law sets give insight into their working lives, the skills required to succeed as a family barrister, and discuss key developments in family law.

This targeted session is suited to aspiring barristers who are interested in family law practice, and run with support from the Family Law Bar Association.

Employed barristers from a range of organisations and practice areas give insight into their working lives at the Employed Bar, and the pupillage options for aspiring employed barristers.

You will hear from barristers working in the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the Government Legal Department (GLD), the regulatory sector, and business and industry.

Meet barristers who have experience of coming to the Bar from 'non-traditional' backgrounds and/or as career changers. This session is designed to share information about different routes to the Bar, and how a career as a barrister is a realistic option, no matter your background.

Junior and senior barristers from leading criminal sets will present on their working lives, the skills required to succeed at the criminal Bar, and key developments in the sector. This targeted session is suited to aspiring barristers who are interested in practising criminal law, and run with the support of the Criminal Bar Association. 

Maximise your chances of submitting a successful pupillage application and start preparing for this year’s recruitment process. 

The Bar Council’s Services team will walk you through the Pupillage Gateway, to help you understand how to use the portal when searching and applying for pupillage. A range of practising barristers will discuss how you can use each section of the application form to improve the likelihood of being offered first round interview. 

Barristers with experience of a range of disabilities share their thoughts on the pupillage recruitment process and life at the Bar, including the challenges that they face(d), existing forms of support, and areas for improvement.

Civil law barristers, including those practising in public and human rights law, technology and construction law, personal injury, and employment law, will present on their working lives and key developments in their area. 

This targeted session is suited to aspiring barristers who are interested in practising civil law, and run with support from the Employment Law Bar Association (ELBA), the Personal Injury Bar Association (PIBA), and the Technology and Construction Bar Association (TECBAR).
