Free classroom resources
Use our free teacher resources in your classroom to support with oracy skills. They’re aligned with the Voice21 oracy framework and the national curriculum in England and Wales for pupils aged 7-11 years old.
Engaging activities
In collaboration with teachers, barristers and educational specialists, we’ve designed 6 engaging oracy-boosting activities. These can be taught in a single lesson or over multiple sessions. Each activity can last around 20-25 minutes. The resources also include an introductory presentation exploring why oracy matters in everyday life and careers - and how it’s a vital skill for barristers.
Activities include:
- Tone twist – how does the way you use your voice help others to understand you?
- Question quest – why are questions important?
- Pass the plot – how can we build on what other people say?
- I couldn’t disagree more! – How can we disagree respectfully?
- What’s the point? – How can we summarise what someone else has said?
- Play your part – How can we use all the oracy skills we’ve learned so far?
Supported by barristers
We know that oracy is an important part of the national curriculum in England and Wales, teaching children to develop their spoken language skills to communicate effectively. Barristers demonstrate excellence in these skills in their daily working lives – whether that’s forming a narrative, delivering well-structured arguments or using evidence and persuasive reasoning.
In each activity we’ve brought the lessons to life by including case studies from barristers to explain how they use these skills in their day-to-day job.
Teacher guidance
Each lesson comes with guidance and notes to support with delivery. We’ve also outlined how our resources align with the Voice 21 oracy framework and the national curriculum in England and Wales.
